The shrine’s gold-and-silver door is opened annually for the even during hajj season. Ministers and body guards stay near. Muslim dignitaries take this opportunity to perform a tawaf and kiss the Black Stone, encased in silver. Embedded in a corner of the Kaaba, the Black Stone is believed to be the only extant piece of Abraham’s original shrine. The Kaaba itself has remained empty since A.D. 630, when Muhammad cleansed it of idols and reaffirmed Islam as a one-0God faith. National Geographic, November 1978

In one of my psych classes, we were learning about happiness and what that means and how we can be happy and what we can do to live a happier life. As this discussion was taking place, I was just astounded at how all the things that studies are showing that help people stay happier is like the fundamentals of Islam and I realized once again what a blessing this Deen is, Alhamdulillah.

-People tend to be happier when they feel like their life has purpose and meaning to it. “Then did you think that We created you without purpose and that to Us you would not be returned?” [23:115] “Say, “Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah , Lord of the worlds.” [6:162] “And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” [51:56]

-Developing an optimistic attitude can lead to being a happier individual. An optimistic attitude is assuming that even if bad things happen, you will manage and do something that will solve the problem. Optimistic people looks forward and finds a way to figure things out; not helpless or hopeless. “And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.” [65:2-3]

-Some components of happiness are control (do something to change the situation), hardiness (thriving under pressure, you can get through this!), and resilience (capacity to deal with adversity). These three things remind me of the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him.

-Two ways to stay happy: Gratitude & Service. Sound familiar ;)
“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.’ ” [14:7] “And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.” [5:32] “The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” [2:261]

Also, a little cool tid bit :) “In a study conducted by Larson and McCullough (1999), the findings discovered that people with high levels of religious involvement have reduced risk for symptoms of depression.”

the best thing to read when you’re feeling sad is Surah ad-Duha. Surah ad-Duha was revealed when the mushriks used to mock rasulAllah (sallAllahu aleyhi wa sallam) and say “Muhammad’s Lord has abandoned him.”

and Allah swore by daybreak that He had not forsaken or forgotten him….
